My work always starts outside- born into the moments when the natural world holds me captive. I start small, trying to mentally record every detail- the pattern of a tree’s bark, the texture of a flower petal, the energy in a single leaf. Then I work my way up to the big picture, in which everything is certified in pattern, balance and the natural rhythm of a life. In our current radical landscape, known as the Anthropocene, there is no longer a single part of the world which has not been affected by us. My current functional work imagines a post-human existence, set in what I call the Radioactive Garden of Eden. Mankind has been driven out by their love of technology and their greed for power. In their stead, animals and plants work to slowly reclaim a world ravaged by radiation and climate change. Using folk imagery, I imagine a world restored to its natural rhythm. Brown clay hums with bright colors and patterns of the present that speak to the chaos of the past.
